BANNARI AMMAN TEMPLE
The Bannari Amman Temple, dedicated to the village goddess of Mariamman, draws huge crowds not only during the annual festival but throughout the year.
Bannari Amman Temple has an interesting legend to it. Stories abound about the unusual sight of tigers and cows quenching their thirst at the same spot of the river. Cowherds used to drive the cattle to feed on the plentiful grass found here and drive them back to the village barns at dusk. The cowherds would milk the cows and hand the day’s collection to the owners.
Soon devotees came to witness this miraculous event and a man who was possessed by divine spirits said that the deity was safeguarding traders from Kerala who passed this way riding on cattle when they were on their way to Mysore to sell their goods. The deity, enamored of the picturesque beauty of the surroundings, decided to stay here to bless and protect the pilgrims.
